The Romans Road Recap Week 5

The Coming Wrath

Romans 1:18-23

The Book of Romans has been called the “Constitution of the Bible”, what an incredible answer book, provided by GOD for many of life’s seemingly toughest questions.

Last week, we talked about the Good News, the Gospel of our LORD and SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST.

Today, we’re going to talk about the bad news that makes the Good News good.

Here it is, ‘Our World is Lost.’

And because of our lostness we are on a collision course with judgment, “The Coming Wrath of GOD.”

Just consider the entertainment and things we amuse ourselves with today.

As we laugh at sin, many of humanity are on their way to an eternity in Hell.

And while humanity laughs crime rates soar, families are destroyed, millions of babies are murdered in their mother’s womb. And we are still laughing folks it shouldn’t be so.

The leading sin today is calling sin a sin, and don’t dare call someone a sinner, even if GOD’S Word says, “we all have sinned and come short of the glory of GOD.”

To call someone a sinner today is to be declared intolerant, to call sin a sin is to be hateful and mean.

Humanity is weak but they are not wicked.

We can be ill, but we are not evil. And so almost anyone can give an excuse for the way we live.

We are in trouble when we cannot agree with the Word of GOD.

Paul set’s the scene for us though and in the word picture he paints, GOD is the Chief Justice, he is the prosecutor, and the judgment is coming and it is called the wrath of GOD.

Romans 1 verse 18, “For God's wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth,

Paul declares we are all sinners without an excuse.

Now in contrast there are many today that just want to talk about the loving GOD, the merciful, gracious GOD of the New Testament.

1 John 4:8-9, males it clear that GOD is love and that HIS love is limitless. But what we must understand from the teaching of the whole of scripture is that this is just a part a portion of who GOD is.

HE is also a righteous, holy GOD, a just GOD and yes a GOD of wrath.

We must understand that to take part of the truth and teach it or to believe it as the whole truth is to make that part of the truth become an untruth.

Romans 1 verse 18, “For God's wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth,

Those described here are literally smothering the truth, “by their unrighteousness,”

This passage Romans 1:18-23 reveals four things that show us we are on a collision course with the wrath of GOD.

  1. Humanity’s Willful self-determinedness. Romans 1:19-20
    1. GOD can be known (1:19)
      1. It has been shown to us (1:19)
      2. There is an inter witness in our hearts – we call that conscience. (John 1:9)
  • To say you don’t believe in GOD is to call yourself a fool. (Psalm 14:1)

Every person knows that GOD exists, it is clear to them.

That’s what the Paul is saying here, “what can be known about God is evident among them, because God has shown it to them.”

So you see, first of all, “Among them or In them,” that’s conscience;

      1. To them,” that’s creation.
        • The blazing stars; this universe; how did it happen? (Psalm 19:1-3)
        • Yet somehow, people have thought that by some accidental coincidence of whatever, that something as wonderful as the human eye just simply happened.
        • Here’s the sad thing, there is the resistance of GOD’S truth.

Look again in Romans 1:18, “For God's wrath is revealed from heaven against all godlessness and unrighteousness of people who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.”

And it’s not that they cannot believe; it is they will not believe.

The problem is not in the head of the atheist; it is in their heart.

  1. A wicked self-deception. (Romans 1:20-21)
    1. Self-deception: they are deceived, their foolish heart is darkened.

Why? Because they have this selfish indifference; they don’t glorify GOD.

  1. And then comes sophisticated ignorance. (Romans 1:22)
    1. Now, here’s the sad thing. Nature despises a vacuum. And if a someone does not believe in the true GOD that doesn’t mean that they will believe in nothing; what it does mean is they’ll believe anything.

Why? Light refused increases darkness. (Romans 1:21)

So here it is first selfish indifference; that’s verse 21.

Second, A wicked self-deception. (Romans 1:20-21)

Verse 22; declares their ‘sophisticated ignorance’;

Verse 23; brings us to their:

  1. A shameful idolatry: look at it, “and exchanged the glory of the immortal God,”
    1. The first thing, we want to glorify is man; that’s humanism (Romans 1:23)
    2. Then all kinds of created things (Romans 1:23)
      1. First, the sinner molds the idol and then the idol molds the sinner.

Now, I said that nature despises a vacuum. And so if we won’t worship and give thanks to CREATOR GOD then we will worship anything.

An idol is anything a human loves more, fears more, serves more or values more than GOD. (2 Timothy 3:4)

      1. We have learned the way of the world, idolatry. (Psalm 106:35-38)

And from the ALMIGHTY GOD of the universe, we are worshipping bugs and worms and killing our unborn.

Have you come to the place in your life where we know our world is, that is a place of?

A willful self-determination. A wicked self-deception. A selfish indifference.

A sophisticated ignorance. And a shameful idolatry

Are you worshipping the Almighty GOD and Creator of the universe or are worshipping an idol of your own making?

Today is the day to repent!
